Now, MIT atmospheric chemists have discovered that the smoke from those fires triggered chemical processes in the stratosphere, resulting in the loss of ozone, which protects the Earth from incoming UV radiation.
The work is the first to prove a chemical relationship between wildfire smoke and ozone depletion, and it was published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
