At a press conference 20 years ago, former prime minister John Howard unveiled the 25-year contract to provide China with liquefied natural gas valued at up to $25 billion from the North West Shelf, which he claimed to be Australia's largest single export agreement in history.
Howard felt happy. He proclaimed that it was "a gold-medal performance."
