The last day of the R.E. Burger coal-fired power plant finished in a haze of black smoke and dust, aptly enough.

The plant generated electricity, smoke and ash in the Ohio River Valley from 1944 to 2011. It was one of the hundreds of coal and steel plants dotting the river banks and has been among the most highly industrialized in the country for years.
