THE GREAT CONJUNCTION OF JUPITER AND SATURN CLOSELY IN NIGHT SKY

On the eve of the winter solstice, Jupiter and Saturn seemed to touch in the night sky.

The last time the two planets looked this close from Earth's vantage point was nearly 800 years ago. The astronomical event is called a conjunction, the term for an alignment of celestial bodies. Since this conjunction involved the two biggest gas giants in our solar system, it's known as the great conjunction.

Astronomy enthusiasts flooded social media with images of the Great Conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn, but one photo from Australia has received a lot of praise on social media.

An Indian photographer in Melbourne clicked a remarkable photo of the rare celestial phenomenon in which the two planets appear this close to each other the first time in nearly 400 years.
