In the aftermath of WWII, 61,000 artworks and artefacts were rescued in Germany by Allied soldiers and returned to France. Many of them were descended from Jewish families.
While over 45,000 items of property were restored to their owners, around 2,200 works (known as MNRs, National Museums Recovery) were placed under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' responsibility and committed to the care of national museums.
