Before the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident caused by a massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami, Japan was widely held up as a cautionary tale on nuclear energy risks.
Locals in the vicinity of the plant are divided on the merits of restarting the nuclear reactor, but many support nuclear power. Japan's government will continue to rely, at least for the time being, on existing nuclear power plants instead of building new ones.
