Hoping for better times, Germany shuts down its nuclear power plants.

A law passed in 2002 mandated the eventual elimination of the emission-free power source, and the Fukushima accident in 2011 sealed the deal. Starting at 10 p.m. on Saturday, the Isar-2 nuclear facility near Munich will begin gradually reducing its power output by 10 MW/min.  After 45 minutes, it will automatically reduce its output to 30% and disconnect from the national power grid.
