Germany's players covered their lips for a team photo before their first World Cup match to protest FIFA's crackdown on seven nations' plans to wear armbands in protest of host nation Qatar's human rights record.

Before Wednesday's game against Japan, Germany lined up in the customary formation, with each of the 11 players covering their lips with their right hand.
