For the first time, a deadly chemical emitted by tyres as they wear down on highways and linked to catastrophic fish fatalities in the United States has been discovered in an Australian stream.

The substance, known as 6PPD-quinone, was discovered among a mix of chemicals and hundreds of tonnes of tyre particles swept into a stream from a highway during storms.
