By no stretch of the imagination is the Australian Medical Association the first organisation that springs to mind when we think of labour unions; rather, we think of the United Food and Commercial Workers. This organisation, which has been around since 1962 and originated from what were then state divisions of the British Medical Association, is representative of a professional sector that is typically well paid and well recognised.
