The Fukushima nuclear disaster was a wake-up call to Japan from relying too much on nuclear energy. The country had tried to reuse spent nuclear material by creating mixed-oxide reactor rods. Post this, disposal of the spent nuclear rods in a safe manner has become an issue for the nuclear plants.
