Germany confronts a difficulty in achieving energy independence due to the remnants of past conflicts

As a result of the conflict in Ukraine, Wilhelmshaven has become a vital centre for German efforts to reduce the country's reliance on Russian energy. There, on the coast of the North Sea, the government would like to construct a massive new terminal to import liquefied natural gas from elsewhere.

Only one issue has delayed the plans: the construction site is littered with explosives from previous conflicts.
