As the Manele family prepares for a normal Monday night meal on Guadalcanal, an island in the South Pacific Ocean, coconut crabs roast over a sheet of roofing iron heated by a fire below.

As the sun sets, John Manele, a subsistence farmer, talks with his boys, 13-year-old Junior Dominic and 17-year-old Jeffry, close to the fire that has been lit at the foot of the steps leading up to the home.
